Outdoor Lighting Trends 2020

Outdoor lighting trends 2020 - LightsOnline Blog

This year has shown us many things–including the importance of outdoor spaces. Even small outdoor areas can help you alleviate the feeling of being cooped up by allowing you to get some fresh air and sunlight. The latest trends in outdoor lighting reflect the idea of using your great outdoors as an extension of your living spaces, turning them into places to enjoy some quality time. Let’s take a look at some outdoor lighting trends for 2020.

1. Outdoor Chandeliers

If you have an outdoor space with some sort of roof, add an outdoor chandelier or two and then you have an al fresco living room! Outdoor chandeliers feature sturdy designs that protect the light sources from the elements while still looking just as chic as their indoor cousins.

Most chandeliers for outdoor use are damp rated, which means they should only be used in covered outdoor areas like patios or porches. However, you might also run into some that are wet rated, which means they can be fully exposed to the elements and are great for pergolas.

Also, there’s nothing keeping you from using an outdoor chandelier indoors! (Just don’t go the opposite way and try to use an indoor-only chandelier outside. They aren’t designed for that.)

2. String Lights

String lights help bring a magical glow to any outdoor area. Try using them in gazebos or pergolas, strung over a deck, to brighten up an outdoor bar, wrapped around railings, on a trellis, inside a patio umbrella or in a tree, as seen above. (However, please don’t hang string lights directly over a pool. This could potentially lead to electrocution!)

If you want to use string lights in an uncovered area like a deck, you might need to use wood posts or steel poles to hang and drape the lights correctly. Some people mount posts or poles directly to the structure of their deck or patio. Others bury the posts or poles in the ground.

You may also want to support your outdoor string lights with tension wire or guy wire to help keep them stable and hold them in the hanging pattern you choose. Some string lights even have loops above each light socket that are designed for threading the supporting wire. The wire helps to shift tension away from the string itself and can keep the lights sturdy, even through gusts of wind.

We even sell color-changing string lights for more fun!

The mix-and-match nature of RLM lighting allows you to become a lighting designer and create a look that is all your own! Usually, RLM lights are sold a la carte, so you will need to purchase a shade and an arm separately to get the full fixture. RLM lights have a very chic vintage industrial look that is ideal for today’s most popular home design styles.

RLM lights are typically wet area rated, so they can be used in any part of your outdoor lighting scheme.
